As the Product Manager at Newton Running, you will be responsible for supporting the Newton Running brand in achieving its long term vision and annual growth targets through management of the footwear and apparel product portfolios. This is a visible leadership position and highly cross-functional with responsibility for market insights, portfolio/product line strategy and management, annual planning, sustainability, launch pipeline creation, new product design and bringing product to life though compelling launch programs. Principal Job Responsibilities

  1. Product Portfolio Management
    • Evaluate market needs through a strong understanding of runner’s consumer behavior, the competitive landscape, and detailed response to Newton’s products.
    • Craft product briefs and pitch concepts to the Newton executive team with relevant information including: competitive landscape, target MSRP/costs/margins, product features and benefits needs, sustainable production & materials, target consumers, target accounts, etc.
    • Work closely with running specialty retailers in acquiring product feedback and direction.
    • Discover, evaluate and prioritize Newton product assortment and growth opportunities relative to consumer needs/segments; competitive running products and pricing; customer assortments, segmentation and merchandising opportunities; and overall design and cultural trends
    • Working with Marketing and Product Development, define 3 year and annual product line imperatives/priorities and seasonal initiatives to achieve sales and margin, enrich the brand and deliver on consumer and retailer/channel needs and goals
    • Evaluate and set financial goals for product pipeline initiatives that achieve annual and strategic product growth targets for the portfolio
    • Build business case in support of annual product initiatives
    • Lead and align key cross-functional and Newton Running stakeholders on product strategy and key annual product line priorities and initiatives
    • Adapt product plans to address shifting needs and opportunities of the market
  2. Product Design & Merchandising
    • Evaluate portfolio to deliver on diverse merchandising/assortment opportunities of consumers and channels including core product improvement, seasonal refresh/extensions, new segment entry and innovation
    • Map and calendar product introductions aligned to portfolio plan
    • Ensure portfolio and select products align with brand DNA and positioning
    • Partner with design to create category and product stories and concepts that address identified market opportunities for Newton Running brand and portfolio
    • Partner with design, development and manufacturing to ensure products meet sustainability goals and contributes to Company goals to reduce environmental impact
    • Lead product cross-functional briefing process for multiple seasons
    • Translate market insights into articulate design briefs including clear product positioning, core design challenge and requirements, including pricing/margin
    • Ensure product design meets strategic direction and positioning of brief; partner with design to deliver product concept and story according to brief/strategy
    • As needed, lead research to validate product concepts and design with target consumer in terms of needs, fit with brand and differentiation
    • Present product line, concepts and designs to senior management, cross-functional stakeholders, and retailers at key points
    • With design team and product development project manager, oversee schedule from brief to production; solve schedule, cost and scope challenges as needed to hit launch dates in annual and seasonal plans
    • Craft process and identify opportunities to accelerate time-to-market
    • Complete all/any paperwork approving designs
  3. Cross-Functional Partnership
    • Align and communicate product strategy and annual initiatives on an on-going basis
    • Plan, project manage and launch annual and seasonal products in order to achieve targets
    • Serve as the brand’s lead on all product presentations both internally and with retailers, trade and lifestyle media outlets, and co-branding partners.
    • Evaluate product launches, discontinuance and expansion opportunities

  5. Core Competencies and Skill Requirements
    • BA or BS in marketing, business or a related field of study; MBA is advantageous
    • Minimum of 4+ years of experience in product management and marketing, footwear product management is an advantage along with exposure to the running specialty trade channel through retail experience and/or a buyer role in running footwear.
    • Finance & Planning: Demonstrated ability and experience in strategic planning, annual planning, sales planning, forecasting and analysis
    • Product Design & Merchandising: Understanding of the product design and development process; experience and exposure to design and working with design teams; understanding of retail merchandising and assortment planning and metrics

Associate Creative Director/Sr. Art Director

Quality Control and Production Manager

Newton Running Company is forming its team in China (Qingdao), and is seeking a Quality Control and Production Manager to grow our business as a premium brand in technical running footwear. The ideal candidate is multi-skilled, energetic and positive, ideally a US expat, and has previous experience in the sport shoe industry, specifically running shoes. This is a perfect role for a creative and energetic self-starter who can multi-task and is motivated to apply their experience and positive attitude in a start-up enterprise with significant growth potential. The position is based in China at the company’s contract manufacturer with frequent visits to our liaison office in Qingdao.

Summary

Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the VP of Asia Development , manage quality of production and inspections of finished product, to ensure that Newton footwear meets quality standards, delivery timelines, and product performance requirements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Production & Quality
    • Conducts and manage final inspections of finished footwear, ensuring product meets or exceeds Newton’s quality requirements.
    • Issues final inspection documentation reports, both to Newton management & to production & quality management teams at Newton’s manufacturing partners.
    • Participates & manages any re-inspection or repair procedures at Newton’s manufacturing partners.
    • Ensures all final shipments are security sealed & signed and not tampered with in anyway, prior to container loading & supervisors and certifies the sealing of outgoing containers (for both full and LCL shipments), including taking & recording of the container seals.
    • Participates in the Product Creation Process (ie: development phase) to ensure the manufacturability of all products, prior to and during the production trial process
    • Liaise with Newton Quality Assurance management team (Aisa & USA) to ensure that production footwear meets Newton’s quality standards and assist in identifying areas of improvement within the Newton supply chain.
    • Nurture a close working relationship/partnership with appointed factories delivering exceptional results against the Newton scorecard metrics.
    • Manage and develop all factory members of Production QA/QC team to ensure all Newton Key initiatives are met in all areas related to factory continuous improvement, including Newton Best practices, quality standards & Code of Conduct.
    • Maintain & update manufacturing specification sheets
    • Support the implementation of continued updated Quality systems, to further improve and optimize the Newton Quality process.
    • Work with Factory, Vendors and Newton materials teams to assist in establishing a system that ensures timely delivery of quality materials and adherence to quality standards.
    • Work with the Newton planning team to ensure on time delivery and reliability targets are met and factory daily throughput activities are kept on time, including the daily monitoring & tracking of production output targets and alert management of any delays.
    • Experience in export/import procedures, documentation and reporting is a plus.
    • Work with Development, Materials and Production team and Factories to prevent potential quality problems and to ensure the product is meeting Newton standards.
    • Gradually learn Newton export documentation needs and then provide support in the creating of export documentation & reporting of such documentation to Newton management.
    • Adherence to the Newton Running rigorous Code of Conduct and compliance with all US and local laws.
    • Personal involvement in the Company’s Social Responsibility goals.
