Newton Running Receives Trickle Up’s Leet Humanitarian Award

APRIL 9, 2012 (Boulder, Co)— Newton Running, the leader in natural form running, was awarded the 2012 Glen and Mildred Robbins Leet Humanitarian Award from Trickle Up, a New York-based, non-governmental organization dedicated to alleviating poverty. Since 2008, Newton Running has made financial contributions to Trickle Up, which provides conditional seed capital and business training to the world’s lowest-earning people so that they may start a micro-enterprise.

“We believe strongly in what they do to help the impoverished become financially independent and give women and their children a chance at a better life,” says Newton Running CEO Jerry Lee.

Trickle Up’s mission resonates personally with Lee, a self-made entrepreneur who grew up in a low-income Illinois household with 14 brothers and sisters, then moved to Boulder, Colorado, to become a highly successful real estate investor and later co-founded Newton Running with Danny Abshire in 2007.

Lee accepted the award on behalf of Newton Running at the annual Trickle Up gala in New York City on April 4. The Glen and Mildred Robbins Leet Humanitarian Award, named after the Trickle Up’s founders, is given to supporters who demonstrate a passionate commitment to the organization’s core mission of eradicating extreme poverty. Past award recipients include Wendy Gordon Rockefeller (2010), a leader in the green consumer movement, and Charles Slaughter, founder of TravelSmith and Living Goods (2009).

Newton Running’s  Director of Social Responsibility (and Jerry’s daughter), Wendy Lee, witnessed first hand the impact of Trickle Up’s investment in small businesses when she and her mother, Donna Lee, visited several war-affected Guatemalan communities in 2009. There, they met people who had opened weaving businesses and bakeries thanks to Trickle Up’s local lending programs.

Newton Running customers can easily support Trickle Up by adding a donation to their purchase from www.NewtonRunning.com.

About Newton Running
Founded by a group of elite runners, coaches and inventors in Boulder, Colorado in 2007, Newton Running shoes use patented technology inspired by Sir Isaac Newton’s elemental laws of motion. Newton Running shoes feature patented Action/Reaction Technology™ that absorbs more impact than traditional running shoe foam and converts this energy into forward propulsion to help runners go farther and faster with less fatigue. Newton’s propulsion technology, combined with a running technique that focuses on a midfoot/forefoot strike rather than heel striking, helps runners achieve maximum efficient performance.

Newton Running Launches “Hello Better” National Brand Campaign

February 21, 2012 (Boulder, Co)—Since its inception in 2007, Newton Running has helped runners and triathletes around the world reap the benefits of natural form running. This spring, Newton Running is taking its messages of how to run better and healthier to the masses with a seven-figure campaign headlined “Hello Better,” which celebrates how Newton Running shoes replicate the way we ran as children: fast, lightly and seemingly forever.

“In just five short years, Newton Running has grown to be a player in the highly competitive running and triathlon shoe market purely through grassroots and word-of-mouth marketing,” says Newton Running CEO, Jerry Lee. “This new national campaign will introduce our shoes to a much larger audience.”

The campaign’s launch coincides with the release of spring 2012 versions of the Gravity Neutral Performance Trainer, Motion Stability Performance Trainer and Distance Light Weight Trainer, the Distance U Light Weight Trainer and the Black MV2, which will be available in U.S. stores in late February.

The advertisements, developed by Breakaway, a hybrid branding agency/VC firm based in Boston that helps innovative companies grow, will appear online and in print magazines such as Runner’s World, Fitness, Triathlete, LAVA and many more. Creative executions feature Newton Running customers exhibiting ideal natural running form, as well as five-time Ironman World Champion Craig “Crowie” Alexander, who has a lifetime contract with Newton Running.

Going live later this spring, a redesigned www.NewtonRunning.com will employ creative elements of the “Hello Better” campaign, more how-to videos and articles about natural form running and its benefits, such as improved efficiency and reduced chance of injury.

Newton Running is expanding its support to running and multi-sport specialty retailers through “Hello Better” POP displays, greater race support, more expos and education from local tech reps. In-store events are growing and will include over 300 Newton Natural Form Running Symposia and Form Clinics in 2012. These free events introduce customers to natural form running technique and the benefits to Newton Running shoes.

Similarly, the Newton Natural Form Running Coaching Certification program has provided hundreds with the tools essential to teaching Newton Natural Form Running since its creation a year ago. In 2012, the program is being redesigned with new standards and a tiered certification process.

Newton Running Athlete Craig Alexander Wins Ford Ironman World Championship

(Boulder, Colo.)–Newton Running professional triathlete Craig “Crowie” Alexander claimed his third victory at the Ford Ironman World Championships in Hawaii on Saturday with a course-record time of 8:03:56, bettering the previous record by 12 seconds. Alexander has been a Newton Running athlete since 2007 and previously won the world championships in 2008 and 2009.

At 38 years old, Alexander is the oldest athlete to ever win the coveted world championship title.

"This was the performance I've been dreaming of," Alexander said in a finish-line interview. "My supporters are the only reason I push so hard. I left it all out there and I've got nothing left."

At Kona, Alexander was in fourth position coming off the bike behind Chris Lieto, Luke McKenzie and Marino Vanhoenacker, but took over the lead just six miles in to the marathon.

Alexander's impeccable running form and formidable speed saw him log 6:11 miles in the opening miles and secure a 1:37 lead over McKenzie by the run turnaround. Despite the 131-degree heat radiating off the tarmac, Alexander clocked 5:53 miles on the return trip along Alii Drive in his Newton Running Distance S Light Weight Trainer, his preferred training and racing shoe.

In the final miles and with a course record within reach, a hamstring cramp forced Alexander to stop three times. Each time, he resumed running immediately and held off the competition to cross the finish line first. His split for the marathon was 2:44:03.

After battling illness earlier this year, Alexander was the man to beat at Kona after setting a course record at June’s Ironman Coeur d’Alene in 8:19:48 and successfully defending his title at September’s 70.3 World Championship in Las Vegas with a time of 3:54:48.

The Australian spends half the year in his home country and the other half in Boulder, Colorado. He has been a professional triathlete for more than 12 years.

Parrish began running, biking and swimming and has since finished four Ironman triathlons and is a member of Team Timex. “Being so close to death taught me to make the most of every day,” says Parrish. “That includes raising awareness about this debilitating condition and supporting companies like Newton Running that want to make a difference.”

Newton Running Debuts the MV2

(Boulder, CO) – This September, leading natural-running education and footwear brand Newton Running is launching the MV2, a super lightweight, zero-drop shoe that encourages a natural-running posture, provides protection and energy return. The 5.8-ounce MV2 (pronounced M V squared) offers a unique solution for runners who want to run faster, perform better and avoid injury by adopting a natural running stride, but not sacrifice protection.

"While all Newton Running shoes feature a low heel-to-toe ramp angle to support natural-running posture, the next logical addition to our line was a shoe that was completely parallel to the ground,” says Newton Running co-founder Danny Abshire. “The MV2 facilitates landing on your midfoot instead of the heel, which supports proper biomechanical alignment, faster turnover rate and greater running efficiency. This means you run faster with less effort."

The MV2’s second-generation Action/Reaction Technology™ is the next evolution of Newton Running’s patented midsole technology. Five articulating lugs align with the foot’s five metatarsal heads. With each step, the low-profile lugs depress into a chamber and rebound quickly with the aid of a highly resilient membrane.

Therefore, unlike racing flats or minimalist shoes that employ a thin layer of midsole EVA foam, which dissipates energy and breaks down rapidly, the MV2's Action/Reaction Technology™ provides long-lasting impact reduction without dampening responsiveness or proprioception.

The highly breathable mesh upper is reinforced with a durable microscreen to block out dirt and debris and transparent PU support strapping ensures a high-performance fit.

Included with every pair of the MV2 are instructions for adjusting to a zero-drop shoe.

The MV2 is available in men’s sizes 6 to 14 and women’s sizes 4.5 to 12 and will retail for $125. Pre-orders are available now at www.newtonrunning.com and will be in specialty retailers by mid-September 2011.

What's the Buzz?

  • Just a few lines to let you know that I had a wonderful race in San Sebastian marathon (Spain) two weeks ago. I ran in 2:30 in my Newton shoes. I'm from the Basque country in Spain and everybody is asking me what shoes are these. I'm the first guy running in these shoes around here. I've done all my previous long runs wearing them and cushioning is just exceptional. I had No blisters or signs of a marathon after the race. Obviously I'm ready for a new pair for my next event. Congratulations you've got a great weapon for runners.
