Newton shoes are different than other running shoes in many ways, including the way they wear over time. Unlike other running shoes that wear from the inside out, reducing cushioning and energy return, Newton running shoes are constructed to wear from the outside in. Their high level of cushioning and energy return will remain for a long time, but you will see more wear on the outsole than with standard running shoes. However, that impact will not adversely affect the performance of the shoe.
Like all running shoes, the longevity of Newton shoes will depend on many factors that are specific to the individual wearing them, including body weight, biomechanics, stride, running efficiency and technique. If you are a midfoot runner you will likely get the same amount of mileage out of your Newton product as your current running shoes.
Runners with a heavy heel strike may not experience the same heel durability as more efficient midfoot strikers. Over time and as you become a more experienced forefoot runner, you will see significantly less wear on the heel of your Newton shoes.
The most visible wear comes during the break-in period, typically the first 30 or so miles of running. You will notice wear in the red lugs immediately. This is normal and part of the Newton design. Each lug will wear differently, and the wear on your right and left feet might be different. This is the technology adjusting to the unique biomechanics of your foot. Do not be concerned with lug wear: this is normal and expected.
Newton shoes are designed for and perform best on hard surfaces, and they can be used on paths, smooth trails and grass. Our current models are not designed for rough terrain, but trail runners can rejoice: a trail model is in the works (look for it in Spring 2009).
Newton Running Shoes provide the most benefit when running on hard surfaces, although they can be used on treadmills. When running on a treadmill we suggest that you increase the gradient to 1-3 percent to accommodate for changes in inertia, momentum and wind resistance found in outdoor running.
While our shoes incorporate heel technology, the technology is primarily a recovery or rebound platform for midfoot striking. If you are a heel striker, we advise transitioning to a more efficient midfoot gait to get the most from your Newton shoes.
If you are a midfoot runner you should expect to get the same amount of mileage out of your Newton shoes as your current running shoes. We recommend that you replace your Newton shoes when you feel the shoes are no longer protective and propulsive. The life of your Newton shoes will extend as your midfoot running skills improve.
